Cardiff Met deservedly left West Wales with all three points after producing an impressive 3-0 victory over Haverfordwest County, with three players particularly catching the eye in a commanding performance.

Centre-back James Clarke led the way for the visitors, combining defensive authority with an outstanding opening goal, while forward Jasper Payne showcased his quality in front of goal.

For Haverfordwest, despite a difficult night for Tony Pennock’s side, left wing-back Rhys Abbruzzese provided a consistent attacking threat and was arguably the home side’s standout performer.

Here are four players who stood out from the Cymru Premier encounter.

James Clarke sets the standard with commanding display at both ends

If there was one player who embodied Cardiff Met’s performance, it was centre-back James Clarke.

The defender was the fulcrum of his side’s victory, delivering an almost faultless defensive display before adding the finishing touch with a superb opening goal just after the quarter-hour mark.

Clarke showed excellent composure to keep his eyes on the ball before unleashing a sweetly struck right-footed effort from the edge of the penalty area. His shot flew beyond home goalkeeper Ifan Knotts, finding the net via the far post to give the visitors a deserved lead.

However, it was his contribution without the ball that made his performance particularly impressive.

Clarke marshalled the Cardiff Met defensive line with authority, using his voice to organise his teammates and maintain their positioning to catch Haverfordwest offside. He was equally impressive physically, refusing to back down from the challenge posed by home striker Ben Ahumn.

His dominance in the air allowed defensive midfielders Aaron Wildig and captain CJ Craven to compete for second balls, restricting Haverfordwest to largely speculative efforts from distance.

Just as importantly, Clarke demonstrated excellent judgement when in possession, clearing his lines without putting teammates under unnecessary pressure in their own half. His ability to manage the defensive line and allow his side to regroup was a key factor in Cardiff Met’s clean sheet.

It was a complete centre-back performance, capped by a goal worthy of winning any game.

Jasper Payne showcases Cymru Premier quality with clinical finish

Cardiff Met’s second goalscorer Jasper Payne provided another reminder of the attacking quality within the visitors’ ranks.

The forward doubled his side’s advantage seven minutes before half-time with an excellent left-footed volley from around 15 yards, leaving Knotts with little chance as the ball flew into the net with both speed and precision.

It was a finish that demonstrated the technical standards on show in the Cymru Premier, but Payne’s contribution extended well beyond his goalscoring exploits.

He linked particularly well with fellow striker and experienced campaigner Sam Snaith, showing an understanding of how to bring the best out of his strike partner.

Payne’s movement was intelligent and unselfish, creating opportunities for Snaith while ensuring Cardiff Met maintained a consistent attacking threat. Comfortable on either foot, he also demonstrated the ability to link play with supporting runners arriving from midfield.

His contribution without possession was equally valuable.

Payne regularly dropped into the right-hand channel to provide the first line of defensive pressure, helping to nullify the threat posed by one of Haverfordwest’s key attacking outlets, Rhys Abbruzzese.

That willingness to contribute defensively, alongside his quality in the final third, made him a particularly effective presence throughout.

Rhys Abbruzzese gives Haverfordwest something to build on despite defeat

While Cardiff Met had plenty of reasons to celebrate, Haverfordwest could take some encouragement from the performance of Rhys Abbruzzese.

The left wing-back was arguably the home side’s brightest attacking outlet, repeatedly providing an option for his teammates and acting as the catalyst for their attempts to transition from defence into attack.

His positioning out wide allowed him to find space and create time to deliver a succession of crosses into dangerous areas. Unfortunately for Tony Pennock’s side, there was no Haverfordwest shirt able to provide the finishing touch.

Abbruzzese had the game’s first effort on target after 10 minutes, cutting inside from the left and showing impressive footwork to beat two opponents before testing Cardiff Met goalkeeper Arron Davies with a right-footed strike.

He was also reliable defensively, keeping a close eye on goalscorer Payne and attacking midfielder Sam Jones despite the disruption caused by captain Dylan Rees being withdrawn 10 minutes before the interval.

Slight in stature but certainly not short of determination, Abbruzzese demonstrated the work rate and commitment that make him such an important figure in the Haverfordwest side.

For a team searching for consistency in mid-table, having a player capable of providing that level of energy and attacking intent every week is invaluable.

Although the result was disappointing, Abbruzzese’s individual contribution offered a positive to take from an evening in which Cardiff Met were deserved winners.

Lifumpa Mwandwe makes decisive contribution with two assists

Lifumpa Mwandwe may not have got himself on the scoresheet, but his contribution to Cardiff Met’s impressive away victory was impossible to overlook.

The attacker provided two assists, supplying Jasper Payne for Cardiff Met’s second goal before setting up Aaron Wildig to complete the scoring in a comprehensive 3-0 win.

For Mwandwe, it was a particularly welcome contribution, marking his first goal involvement since the away fixture at Ammanford at the end of August.

Having waited for an opportunity to make a decisive impact in the final third, he will have been delighted to play such an important role in securing a significant three points on the road.

His ability to create opportunities for teammates underlined the attacking depth within Cardiff Met’s squad, with his two assists providing a fitting reward for his efforts.

While Clarke and Payne grabbed plenty of the headlines, Mwandwe’s contribution was another important factor in a convincing afternoon for the visitors.
