Newly promoted Queens Park recordered a convincing 4-0 win against relegated Airbus on Friday 18th August in their first home game in the Cymru Alliance league this season.
It was an outstanding performance by the Queens Park side who went into the fixture as under-dogs due to the divisional status between both sides last season.
Both teams were struggling to find rhythm in the match’s beginning and possession was evenly split. The only real chance of the first 35 minutes coming when Sean Skimmings cross was volleyed onto the crossbar by winger Helder Ramos.
But on the 36th minute mark the deadlock was unpredictably broken as the ball got sent to the far post of the Airbus goal from a corner. It found the head of centre-back Danny Myers who powerfully placed it into the opposite side of the net.
Just as fans began settling for a 1-0 half time lead, Airbus took their best chance of the half but a scrambling defence and a perfectly timed slide tackle from goalkeeper Joseph Jones kept the clean sheet in tact.
But the half’s action still wasn’t finished! As playmaker Michael Latham played Helder Ramos into the Airbus box, Ramos went to make a turn and was tripped by an Airbus player attempting a slide tackle.
A penalty was given and Latham stepped up putting the ball high and straight down the middle as ex-Wrexham Coughlin dived to his right.
So it was 2-0 going into half time, Airbus manager Andy Thomas had a great task of turning the result in Airbus’ favour.
Queens Park manager Martin Ford came off the pitch with his team in extremely high spirits, knowing they were in control of the game, something they continued to show throughout the second half.
Throughout the second half Queens Park were dominant with the whole team putting on a solid defensive display as they quelled the Airbus danger-men.
They outplayed Airbus for a long time until they got their next good chance, when another penalty was given in the 59th minute for a soft challenge on the other Queens Park winger Nathan Buckley.
Latham stepped up again but couldn’t convert as Coughlin dived to his right again and this time saved the shot. However, the next minute, Latham received the ball in space on the edge of the Airbus box, played a through ball to striker Sean Skimmings who put the ball round Coughlin in a one on one situation and scored the teams third.
Two minutes later, Skimmings doubled his tally for the match as Buckley made a darting run into the box and sent a cross along the ground to Latham. Latham made poor connection and the ball travelled a couple metres forward to the feet of Skimmings who tapped in from six yards for Queens Parks fourth of the afternoon.
As for the last 20 minutes, there were no strong chances, Queens Park did start to tire in the last five minutes but at that point they’d already put on an outstanding performance in front of 230 fans.
As the final whistle blew, Queens Park’s players became filled with joy after securing a victory against such high-profile opposition.
Man Of The Match
Danny Myers – He put on a strong defensive display to help the team shutdown the Airbus attack on many occasions and scored the first goal, a major factor in how the flow of the game became suited to Queens Park style.
