The Danish Football Association have confirmed that their UEFA Nations League fixture with Wales WILL go ahead on Sunday afternoon.
The Danish National Football Players Association are currently in a dispute with the DBU [Danish FA] in regards to commercial rights.
It means that the Danish side that lines up against Wales on Sunday, could be a weakened side, missing key players like Tottenham star Christian Eriksen and Leicester City goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel.
Denmark will already be without manager Åge Hareide who according to Danish TV2 has gone on holiday, for the fixtures against Slovakia and Wales.
Claus Bretton-Meyer, CEO of the DBU confirmed the games would go ahead:
“We are working to get the best possible players to play the two matches for Denmark.
It is crucial for the future of Danish football. If the games are not played, we may be fighting millions of fines and exclusions for both national teams – and Danish football will be returned to the Stone Age in many areas.”
The previous deal between the DBU and the Player Association expired on the 31st July. The Danes had recently played in the World Cup, losing to losing finalists Croatia on penalties.
Negotiations were suspended after an agreement was not made on the 31st of August.
The Danish FA are now working hard to find a temporary head coach and a squad, ahead of their fixtures for Wednesday’s game away in Denmark, before beginning their UEFA Nations League campaign against Wales.
