Wales international Matthew Smith has joined Charlton Athletic on deadline day.

Smith ended his season-long loan with Queens Park Rangers earlier this month and has since moved across London to join Charlton.

The 20-year-old moves to the valley having made ten appearances for QPR after being loaned out by Manchester City.

He links up with Wales teammates Adam Matthews, Jonny Williams and Tom Lockyer.

“It’s a wonderful football club with a lot of history,” Smith said to Charlton’s official club website

“I just can’t wait to get going. I’ve come here to try and get an opportunity to play and prove to everyone that I can do it at this level.

“I spoke to Tom Lockyer and he just told me what an amazing football club it is and that the feel for the club is really nice which helped me make the decision to join this club.”

Addicks boss Lee Bowyer added: “I’m looking forward to working with him, he’s another young one that is going to give us plenty of energy in the middle of the park. It’s a good positive signing for me.”

Smith could make his Charlton debut against Stoke City next weekend.
