“The Thorns and Portland have been home for me and my family for the last five years, and we depart with many fond memories and experiences.

“I am very grateful to so many people, from ownership, to front and back office, all the staff and of course the players.”

Gunney will assist former Manchester United head coach Casey Stoney as San Diego embark on their first season in the league.

In a statement on social media Gunney said: “[I’m] extremely excited for the new challenge ahead with San Diego Wave FC. Looking forward to the next chapter and ready to embark on this very exciting journey!”

San Diego will began playing at the start of the 2022 season and have currently only announced one player for their squad.

That player is former Manchester City player and World Cup winner Abby Dalhkemper who joins from Houston Dash.
