Lex Glyndwr face FC Penley in title showdown

FC Penley make the trip across Wrexham to Stantsy Park for what could prove to be a fiercely competitive game against fellow promotion chasing rivals Lex Glyndwr.

Both teams go into this match with excellent records, currently unbeaten in the league this year – the last time either team faced a defeat was back in October when Penley were beaten 4-3 at home to New Brighton Villa.

The reverse fixture ended with an entertaining 3-3 draw but with the season drawing to a close and 3rd place Rhostyllen vying for a promotion spot in the top two, the pressure will be felt on both sides to ensure either team walk away with three points.

Lex boss Ricky Evans has a full squad to choose from on Tuesday night and with recent wins against Rhydymwyn and Llangollen Town as well as a massive 13-1 win over Maesgwyn, Lex will be going into this game in confident mood. Craig Salisburys Penley have only one player missing with tough tackling midfielder Aaron Williams suspended for the clubs final two games of the season.

Top goal scorer Matty Wills will be looking to add to his 31 goals and Penley’s huge 101 haul this season, second only to Rhostyllen’s 102.

Five points separate the two sides with Penley’s two remaining games proving to be a trickier end than Lex’s.

After Lex, Penley entertain Rhostyllen, while Lex have an away tie to bottom side Acrefair and finish the season at home to New Brighton Villa, so a Lex win this evening could give them a realistic opportunity of winning the league, regardless of the outcome in Penley’s final match.

However, on the flip side a Penley win will see them win the league tonight and gain promotion the Welsh National League Premier Division with a game to spare. A huge achievement given their short history as FC Penley.

Both teams will not underestimate each other and it wouldn’t be surprising if we see a tense encounter rather than a free flowing end to end game, either way this will prove to be one of the biggest games the 1st Division has had for quite a while.

Entry to the game at Stantsy Park which kicks off at 6:15pm is free with programmes available at £1 each. Refreshments will be available at half time.

Before the game the table stands as below, but may cut a different picture after this evening’s Division One action.

Division One Top Three

P W D L F A Pts
Penley 20 16 2 2 101 23 50
Lex Glyndwr 19 14 3 2 88 22 45
