Barry Town United 0-3 Newtown: Aaron Williams hat-trick stuns Linnets
Aaron Williams continued his fine scoring form with a hat-trick for Newtown in their 3-0 win over Barry Town United at Jenner Park.
He first converted a penalty on the half-hour mark before he got his second shortly after the break and then completing the rout in the 66th minute.
Newtown move up to fifth place in the JD Cymru Premier table leapfrogging Barry on goal difference. Barry move down into sixth position.
An early long throw into the box by Aaron Williams was almost poked in at the near post but Barry were able to clear.
David Cotterill hit an effort from the edge of the box that went over the bar in an early bit of pressure.
Barry had a big chance to take the lead with a good passing build between Rhys Kavanagh and Day. Day took a shot which was well saved by Dave Jones. Kane McLaggon was first to the rebound but unable to get a clean strike and it was cleared from the line.
It was from a Mwandwe run that caused Day to give away the penalty. Right on the edge of the box, it seemed a soft foul but the referee was quick to point to the spot. Williams calmly rolled the ball down the centre.
As added time started Barry had a really good chance to go in level. In a brief spell of good passing, Barry worked the ball out to the left of the Newtown box to Marcus Day. Day hit a low strike that was saved well by Jones.
Just before the break, Barry’s Aron Davies went down after a clash. The Barry player was not moving and the physio were quick on to the pitch. After a few minutes, they helped Davies to his feet and off the field. Davies is suspected to have suffered a concussion injury. He was replaced by Evan Press at halftime.
Newtown began the second half better and had an early chance that Mike Lewis had to be quick to save.
They soon had a second, Mwandwe sent in a cross finding Williams who’s first shot was saved by Lewis. Williams was quickest to the loose ball to tap in.
In search of a response, Rhys Abbruzzese put a corner to the far post that was met by Curtis McDonald, who headed over.
Newtown got a third after 66 minutes as Williams got his hat trick, Mwandwe cut to the byline and played the ball across the box where Williams was on hand to tap in.
It could have been four as David Cotterill’s corner was punched away by Lewis. Nick Rushton hit the follow-up shot which was saved by Lewis.
With a three goal lead, Newtown looked to see out the game and they did that well stopping Barry from any real chances and forcing them to play inside their own half.
