Welsh National League Division One side Rhostyllen FC travelled to face Maesgwyn in a Saturday league fixture that would become a landmark result in their history.
Over the course of the fixture they put a staggering 20 goals past their hosts, and all whilst keeping a clean sheet.
Rhostyllen went into the game hoping to stay top of the league with a win over newly promoted strugglers Maesgwyn, but the whole affair almost never happened with heavy rain forcing a pitch inspection which to both sides’ relief passed the surface as playable.
With an away victory their main objective, Rhostyllen’s manager Gareth Parry had an ironic message to his players before the game: don’t concede. Speaking to Clwb Pel Droed, the club’s official Twitter account gave further insight into Parry’s instructions.
“He instructed the team to go about their individual jobs, be professional, but to ensure we don’t concede.”
The game got off to a dream start with two goals in the first two minutes, with a further eight added in the first half before Rhostyllen hit Maesgwyn for another 10.
James Jones was the highest scorer with five goals with Steven Jones netting a hat trick. Team mates Danny Wynne, Rob Gibson, Lewis Clamp and Ollie Allman all got on the score sheet to seal a 20-0 win to stay top of the table with a five point lead and a goal difference of 60+.
After the game, Parry reflected on an incredible 90 minutes for his side one of the likes he conceded he may never experience again.
“It was a great result, we played some fantastic football and some of the goals we scored were terrific! I’ve never been involved in a game with such a high score and probably won’t be again!”
With Saturday’s exploits greatly benefiting their goal difference, Rhostyllen must push on in their title bid with Lex Glyndwr and Penley hot on their heels.
