Why Newtown are the team to watch in WPL play-offs

With their place in the Welsh Premier League play-offs now secure, Newtown will be team to look out for in the play-offs.

The 7th placed side could be seen as outsiders, with the Robins having to have a consistent run to get the opportunity to play against Bangor City in a few weeks time.

Chris Hughes’ men have yet to taste to defeat and with a winning run breeds confidence and this will be the perfect time for Newtown to prove their worth, in a two game play-off which could see them sneak through the back door of the play-offs.

A crushing 7-0 away victory at Airbus UK only shows that Newtown have performed exceptionally well in Phase Two and are unfortunate to find themselves in the Bottom 6 rather than the Top 6, with injuries during the regular season.

Speaking to Sgorio after their 7-0 victory over Airbus UK, manager Chris Hughes spoke of the turnaround at the club where at one point in the season the club were bottom of the division.

“People were writing us off when we were bottom, to pull ourselves around speaks volumes of what we’ve got in the dressing room and at this football club.

We’re delighted to finish 7th, We’ll go into the play-offs as under-dogs we know that. We said that two years ago and look what happened then.”

Even with the acknowledgement of being under-dogs, the underdog tag could mean that for them anything could be seemed as a success following the turnaround and could be seen as a platform to perform better next season.

One thing that could go against Newtown in the play-offs though is the absence of in-form striker Jason Oswell who looks a shoe-in for the Welsh Premier League Golden Boot award as he has a long outstanding commitment to work.
