Three things learnt as Cardiff Met and Gap Connah’s Quay cancel each other out

Cardiff Met and Gap Connah’s Quay played out a 0-0 draw at Cyncoed Campus but what are the three things we learnt from the drab stalemate in the Welsh Capital?

In a game where chances were few and far between, Matty Owen had the best chance, rattling Will Fuller’s upright with a thunderous effort from outside of the box on the stroke of half-time, but apart from that, there was no real chances to note.

So what are the three things we can take from today’s game?

Met are a lot more defensively assured

Up until the last two games, Met were conceding goals for fun but in their previous two games they’ve kept clean sheets – against Camarthen Town and Gap Connah’s Quay today.

Today especially, Met were rarely threatened and this was credit to how Met set-up and stifled Gap Connah’s Quay, and it certainly puts Met in better stead going into their Welsh Premier League play-off match against Camarthen, who they recently put to the sword – winning 4-0.

Typical end of the season dead rubber game

Today’s game certainly had the element of a typical end of the season affair, with both teams cancelling each other out. There was no real chances to note, and in general, it was a drab affair.

To some it must have come as a surprise, with Met wanting to make a statement before their Welsh Premier League play-off at Camarthen and Gap Connah’s Quay looking to obtain second-place – which they did courtesy of The New Saints beating Bala Town 6-4 in a 10 goal thriller.

Andy Morrison has turned Gap Connah’s Quay around

Gap Connah’s were a team not to long ago who were fighting for Welsh Premier League survival, but Andy Morrison has changed their fortunes around. He first took over in 2015 and led the Normads to a highest ever finish of fourth.

This season Morrison has took them a step even further – finishing second, and he deserves tremendous credit for making Gap Connah’s Quay a more efficient and resilient side overall.
