Welsh League Division Two side Pontypridd Town have been recognised for their work this season with a third consecutive wildcard entry into this season’s Nathaniel MG Cup, where they will be able to test themselves against Welsh Premier League and Division outfits from both South and North Wales.
Ponty missed out on promotion to Division One this season by the narrowest of margins, after Cwmamman United pipped them to the post by a solitary point come the end of the season. However, their success has still been recognised with this wildcard entry, after being promoted from Division Three just the previous season.
This is their third consecutive wildcard entry into the competition. The Town were defeated in the first round last season, but can hold their heads high given they posed Welsh Premier League outfit Newtown a real threat in the 4-2 loss, a remarkable achievement for a club who were in Division Three in 2015/16.
The club will not be afraid of playing higher calibre opposition having previously played high profile fixtures during the off-season against Valencia and Deportiva la Coruna in Spain.
Both Damien and Dominic Broad, joint managers, expressed their delight at the news.
“We are delighted to get recognition for our hard work and to be selected as a wildcard for the third year in a row,” said Damien in reaction to the news. Whilst Dominic stated that “the opportunity to challenge ourselves against the top flight of Welsh football gives us the motivation to progress and a milestone to measure ourselves against.”
The Dragons have drawn Taffs Well in the first round.
