Nomads’ skipper handed new contract

Connah’s Quay Nomads have confirmed the renewal of a number of player contracts, including a one year deal for club captain George Horan.

Goalkeeper John Danby, defender Sean Smith and forward Declan Poole have all also agreed one year contracts to stay at Deeside.

All four players were part of Nomads’ 2016/17 season, when they finished second as runners up to TNS, the club’s highest ever Welsh Premier League finish.

Former Chester captain Horan played an influential role in the Nomads’ season despite being sidelined for most of phase one. His efforts were recognised by other WPL managers when he was included in the official team of the season.

Nomads’ goalkeeper John Danby joined Horan in the line up, having finished the campaign with the best defensive record in the league, conceding two less than champions TNS.

Sean Smith, who has also played for Wrexham and Bala, is extending his stay at Deeside for another year, having originally joined in 2014 before spending a season at Maes Tegid.

Declan Poole will remain a Nomad after joining in January, and although he featured only a few times for Nomads, his volley goal to defeat TNS made the shortlist for goal of the season.

The Nomads’ new contracts come as the club prepares for its pre-Europa League programme, during which they travel to play Ballymena in Northern Ireland and St Johnstone in Scotland.
