Caernarfon Town manager Iwan Williams says that he is only focused on how his side performs as his Cofis side take on Rhyl this Saturday.
Iwan Williams’ takes his side to Belle Vue this week in what is already being described as a big fixture, early on in the season as the both are touted as contenders for the Cymru Alliance title, come the end of the season.
But despite the early importance of the clash, the Canaries boss says that he’s only focused on how his side performs this season, not taking into consideration how the other teams play.
“I’ve changed about my own personal mindset this season. I’m not worried about Rhyl or any other team for that matter. I’m only worried about us and how we approach the game and our own performance levels.”
And with that, Caernarfon have won three of their first four league games, with only a defeat to Holyhead Hotspur the game that stood out, but Williams has praised the effort the players have put in so far this season.
“The start we’ve made has been positive. To win three of the first four games especially given how tough the fixtures have been is pleasing.
However the defeat to Holyhead still hurts. We should have got more out of that game also but again key decisions have gone against us. I was extremely proud of the lads for throwing everything towards them for 70 minutes with ten men which shows how stronger, mentally we are this term.”
Interestingly, Caernarfon toppled the current Welsh Premier League leaders Llandudno in the Nathaniel MG Cup and his rousing team talk meant that the players gave the performance they needed to give them that boost against Denbigh Town.
“The spirit within the changing room is high. I brought the players in early before the Denbigh game and grilled them hard as the performance at Port wasn’t good enough.
I got the reaction I wanted as we were unplayable that day. Then we go and out battle the WPL leaders. We were ruthless at the back that night, combative in midfield and our front men caused all sorts of problems.
There is a buzz about us at the moment but we know Rhyl is going to be a difficult test, however my squad are eager and would play the game yesterday if they could!”
As stated, the focus for Iwan Williams this season will be to focus on his own side but is aware of the threat and stature that Rhyl can bring against his side.
“I haven’t looked much at anyone else’s results as I’m only focused on us. I’ve not even looked at the league table! It’s too early in the campaign to determine who finishes where in my opinion.
Rhyl are a huge club with massive expectations though whom I guess won’t be settling for anything other than to be challenging come the end of the season.”
Going in to the game, Caernarfon will only have one injury worry as summer recruit Joe Williams picked up an injury in the Nathaniel MG Cup tie with Llandudno.
“We have a slight worry over Joe Williams who took a knock early in the game at Llandudno so we’ll monitor him in training this week but we’re expecting him to come through it. Other than that we have everyone fit, available and looking forward to the game.”
