Experienced non-league defender Darren Joins seventh tier Gwent County side West of St Julians

West of St Julians have completed the signing of former Bath City and Newport County defender Darren Jones.

It’s the second marquee signing in the space of a year after the seventh tier side recruited experienced Welsh Premier League defender Cortez Belle to the club.

Jones, who retired from professional football back in May following his departure from hometown team Newport County is now making his move into the amateur football scene.

Most recently, the former Bristol City defender had moved to Vanarama National League South side Bath City where he was named captain. He played a number of times, before departing them earlier this month.

During his professional career, Jones played for a number of sides and even came up against giants Manchester United, managed by the great Sir Alex Ferguson.

The club announced the news on social media as they paraded their new signing to their Twitter followers, describing him as a ‘natural leader’ as they look to add experience to their back line.

Throughout his career, he has played for sides based close to home, featuring for Forest Green Rovers, Cheltenham Town, Hereford United, Shrewsbury Town.

The 34 year-old will have the opportunity to don the white shirt for the first time this Saturday as St Julians travel to divisional new boys Usk Town who have made an impressive start to the season.
