Cardiff Met have stuttered in their first two games of phase two of the JD Welsh Premier League, so what do they need to do in order to avoid repeating their problems of last season in the second-half of the campaign?
Met have suffered two successive defeats in phase two in the league, having succumbed to losses to both Bangor city and Connah’s Quay Nomads, and they need to try to improve on their current form if they’re to have ambitions of playing European football next season.
The students came ever so close to securing a European place last season, only to lose to Bangor City in the play-offs. Ideally, the Archers will want to avoid the play-offs this time around, and it is certainly possible they will avoid the play-offs this time around, with Met just five points adrift from third place.
However, they have made a disappointing start to phase two last season, which meant they were playing catch-up and therefore, missed out on securing their place for Europe this season.
And the Archers are already showing glimpses of inconsistencies within their game this season. The students are definitely capable of challenging for the top three, but if they’re going to, they will need to rediscover their form from phase one of the JD Welsh Premier League season.
Met started the season in blistering fashion and took the opening few months of the season by storm, even leading the league at one stage of the season following the sensational form of Elliot Evans and Adam Roscrow.
Of course, the injury of Roscrow hasn’t helped and he is still easing his way back into action following two appearances since his comeback, but both he and Evans will need to flourish if Met want to finish in the top three come the end of the season.
They have the talent and a superb coach in Christian Edwards, but it is about getting the balance right. The Archers were playing with a real ebb and flow about their play, but that seems to have disappeared in the opening two matches of phase two.
The Archers started the season with a real energy about them all over the pitch, too and there is no reason why they can’t recapture the purple patch of form they showed in the early phases of the season to put them in good stead, starting with a win over Cefn Druids on Saturday, which could prove to be a tricky test for Edwards’ men.
