JD Welsh Cup final to be held at Newtown’s Latham Park

Latham Park

Latham Park, the home of Newtown AFC has been announced as the venue to host this season’s JD Welsh Cup final between Connah’s Quay Nomads and Aberystwyth Town on Sunday 6 May.

The ground, which holds 5,000 people last hosted the final in 2015, when The New Saints claimed their sixth title, and denied Newtown the chance the lift the trophy at their own ground.

The Green and Whites saw off Newtown 2-1 in the semi-finals, whilst the Nomads dispatched Bangor City 6-1 at Belle Vue, Rhyl.

Aber have not won the Welsh Cup since 1900, with their last final appearance coming in 2014 when they narrowly lost 3-2 to TNS at the Racecourse, Wrexham.

The Nomads have only appeared in one final, back in 1998 when they lost on penalties to Bangor City, again at the Racecourse.

The record between the two sides this season stands at one apiece. The Nomads triumphed 5-1 at Deeside in December, with Aber exacting revenge in a a 4-2 victory at Park Avenue in January.

Speaking to faw.cymru, FAW Head of Competitions Andrew Howard said: “We are delighted to return to Latham Park in Newtown for the 2018 JD Welsh Cup Final. The club were excellent hosts in the 2015 Final and the venue showcases the very best of facilities in mid-Wales.

We are hoping to create a really exciting event for the fans of Aberystwyth and Connah’s Quay to remember for a long time.

The game will be broadcast live on S4C, and will also be available on the S4C website and Sgorio Facebook page.
