A five star performance from STM Sports saw them return to the top of the Welsh Football League Division Two, as they easily saw off a lacklustre Dinas Powys on Tuesday evening.
Goals are never hard to come by in games involving STM Sports, and their game against Dinas Powys was no different, as five different players found the back of the net.
It took seven minutes for the home side to have their first attempt, Dale Gardiner fizzed a left-footed shot straight at Elliott Matthews.
Dinas Powys, who have won on only four occasions this season, had a good chance to take the lead three minutes later. A ball was invitingly floated in from the left, however Aidan Perrett was unable to get a good connection at the back post.
The away side were immediately made to pay for the missed opportunity. An incisive ball from David Biggs played in Michael Hodge who slid the ball under Matthews to give his side the lead.
Four minutes later, STM Sports doubled their lead with a moment of brilliance by Chris Worsley. The number ten took the ball on the right side of the box, turned back inside and unleashed a chip shot with the outside of his foot which nestled into the left corner.
Quick reactions from Matthews prevented the Llanrumney-based side from scoring again six minutes later. A ball into the box found Ben Ahmun who’s header was well saved by the Dinas Powys goalkeeper.
One minute later, however, the league’s top-scorers scored their third. From a fairly innocuous position, Dale Gardiner took a left-footed curling shot first time which floated over Matthews and in.
Ben Luck’s men almost pulled a goal back in the 25th minute, when a free-kick rebounded to James Bloxham who’s first time volley flew narrowly wide.
The final action of the first half was a shot by Ahmun at the near post which was well saved by Matthews.
Dale Gardiner’s men had a chance to extend their lead one minuet after the break, when a ball from Ahmun found Hodge who’s header was gathered by Matthews in the Dinas Powys goal.
Ashley Park almost got his side’s fourth in the 54th minute. The number seven timed his run well, beat the offside trap and tried a dinked effort which was snaffled by Matthews, who’s busy game continued.
STM, who play their home games at Cardiff University Sports Fields, finally netted their fourth in the 63rd minute. Josh Graham whipped a ball in from the left which landed on a plate for Park who tapped in for one of the simpler goals he will score in his career.
The home side guaranteed their 18th win of the season when they found the net once again in the 70th minute. Geza Hajgato broke the line, took the ball around a helpless Matthews and was unselfish in laying it off to Richie brown who scored into an empty net.
The win means that STM Sports stay well in the hunt for promotion to the Welsh Football League Division One, while defeat for Dinas Powys means that relegation to Division Three was mathematically confirmed.
