Brymbo FC clinched the Welsh National League Division One title with a 3-0 win over Mynydd Isa Spartans on Wednesday evening.
The club was relegated last season, but a successful campaign has seen them return to the third tier Premier Division amongst the likes of Chirk AAA, Corwen and Wrexham rivals Lex Glyndwr.
Brymbo’s title challenge went down to their final game away at Mynydd Isa, as FAW Trophy champions Rhos Aelwyd remained well in the race just one point below Brymbo in second.
However, a resounding victory over their Flintshire opponents sealed the title with goals from Jordan Jones, Jamie Cumming and Andy Noonan.
Promotion was secured with four games to spare, confirming an immediate return to the Premier Division for the club after taking on experienced coaches Phil Hudson as manager and assistant Tommy Holmes.
Hudson came to the club after a successful spell in the Cheshire & Wirral leagues, winning five trophies in four seasons during time with Woodchurch Athletic and Ashville.
Holmes is an experienced Welsh pyramid player who won multiple Welsh Premier League titles with The New Saints.
Following Brymbo’s title celebrations, Phil Hudson spoke to Y Clwb Pel Droed;
“The first priority when I came in at the beginning of the season was to get a good number two and players in that I had faith in as I knew it was a long project here at Brymbo, to get Tommy Holmes in as number two was a real coup for us and it’s funny because I was originally trying to get him as a player but he was struggling with injuries.
“I had a chat with him about coming in with me and the rest was history, we got a decent set of lads in and knew it would take a while for them to learn each other’s game and gel, we decided with the board that if they found their feet a realistic aim would be promotion.
Hudson reflects on the season and how a unbeaten spell up until February propelled their bid for the title.
“The season began really well and it was clear to see our aims were correct as we never lost a league game until February and found ourselves in pole position for promotion as Llangollen Town, Rhos Aelwyd, Cefn Mawr and ourselves were the leading four, with four games to spare we secured promotion and then we had to finish the season with taking at least 10 points from those four games to claim the title, the lads duly obliged and we won the league with a 3 -0 win at Mynydd Isa.
The pleasing thing for the management was the fashion the lads finished the season off, they were under pressure and in the last six games scored 25 and conceded only one which is phenomenal, to get the club back in the Premier Division at the first attempt is fantastic for me and Tommy, as we know the history of the club and that this is the minimum standard a club like Brymbo should be playing in.
Plans are already underway for next season as the club looks to reestablish itself as a mainstay in the third tier.
“We will look to add a few players next year but not many as we have faith in the lads already on board, with a few additions we are confident we can be competitive and hold our own in the Premier, we will also make a few additions to the coaching team and the lads will have a great group around them for training and pre match warm ups, with all that said we look forward to a nice break now and we will be back in July with some games to see how the squad is looking and we will take it from there.”
