Wales’ current World Cup qualifying campaign could be Jess Fishlock’s last as she considers international retirement.
The 31-year-old is Wales’ most capped player, with 101 appearances made for Wales, 9 caps ahead of goalkeeper Neville Southall.
But for Fishlock, this campaign could be her last, as she considers retiring from international duty.
Fishlock made her debut back in 2006 after progressing through the U19s squad. She was captain between 2012-2015, before Liverpool’s Sophie Ingle was given the armband.
“I feel this could potentially be the last one [campaign],” Fishlock said to BBC Wales.
“I will throw everything into this and then I need to sit down with Jayne, with Wales and see what they’re thinking and I will respect that.”
She currently plays Seattle Reign but spent time on loan at Melbourne City, where she helped coach them to their second consecutive W-League Grand Final.
The Cardiff born star has had a glittering playing career, including success with AZ Alkmaar, Melbourne Victory, Seattle Reign, FFC Frankfurt and Melbourne City.
However, qualifying for the World Cup finals in France next year would be one of her top achievements, having never done so.
“I love my country and not playing for them would be something very difficult for me, but equally I’ve played for over a decade now and it’s OK to stop.
“The hope of qualifying is there, which is great.
“It would mean everything, and to do it now at the latter end of my career would be the icing on the cake.
The Dragons are currently second in Qualifying in the World Cup, trailing England by two points, with home games against Bosnia & Herzegovina and Russia scheduled for next week.
At the moment, Wales would currently miss out on a playoff spot based on their current second place position. Wales has five points on the board, with their results against fifth-placed teams not included. However, Wales has nine points left to play for, with a home game against England still to play. Wales hope to make a first-ever appearance at the FIFA Women’s World Cup.
