South Wales FA 5-0 Region of Gothenburg – Green’s men ease to victory in Regions Cup opener

It was a five-star performance from the South Wales FA side, as they began their UEFA Regions Cup campaign with a convincing win over the Region of Gothenburg at Jenner Park Stadium in Barry.

The win puts South Wales top of Group A in the preliminary round after Evia beat the Amateurs of Macedonia at Cycnoed earlier on in the day.

Stephen Green’s men were in complete control of the game and never looked like losing, with the scoreline reflective of their attacking prowess.

Wales began on the front foot and had two chances in the opening moments of the game. Ryan Morgan hit an effort which Kecevic tipped onto the crossbar before Christopher Colvin-Owens hit a shot into the side netting from a tight angle.

The hosts opened the scoring early on when Goytre United’s Adam Jenkins earnt a penalty after being fouled by Zumberi Naser.  He stepped forward and sent Kecevic the wrong way.

Baglan Dragon’s Jordan Evans doubled the lead in the 15th minute when his powerful half-volley just outside the box, caught the keeper out.

Gothenburg tried to reduce the deficit when Viktor Lundqvist’s free-kick was swung into the box and was met by captain Kassim Coaney who’s stretching effort hit the crossbar.

It was three towards the end of the first half. Christopher Colvin-Owens beat the offside trap following a ball from Long and coolly slotted it home for his first.

The Swedish side had two chances to get off the mark, but Wales were holding firm. Ihab Yasin firstly saw his shot whistle past the post, before Coaney forced Stephen Price into his first save as he denied the captain.

Wales began the second half as they did in the first. Colvin-Owens beat the offside trap again and took it past the Gothenburg defender, before unleashing a powerful effort, ending up in a goal.

Canton Liberal’s Christopher Quick was introduced and he scored immediately after coming on. In his first touches, he stabbed the ball past Kecevic.

The game began to slow down in pace after Wales had their fifth. Gothenburg’s Henos Araya hit a half-volley in the box but it went the other side of the post for the Swede.

Later, Rengber Kalash lined up a free-kick but it was put over the bar.

Travis Monks-Landeg had the final real opportunity of the game when his curling effort was parried away by the goalkeeper, as Wales gave a five-star performance.
