Wales manager Jayne Ludlow says she has no worries about playing on the Newport Stadium pitch in her sides upcoming World Cup qualifier with Russia.
The Wales women played at The Liberty Stadium on Thursday evening, as over 2000 people turned up to see them beat Bosnia & Herzegovina, as they kept their dreams of qualifying for a major tournament alive.
Her side are currently unbeaten in Qualifying, with Cyncoed Ladies shot stopper Laura O’Sullivan having yet to concede.
This Tuesday, they play at Newport Stadium, which was the former home of Newport County for many years, before moving to Rodney Parade. The current team that plays at Newport Stadium is Welsh Football League Division Three side Newport City.
“We love it. Look we’ve got some international players who have played on pitches like Blaenrhonddda Park and worse for many years,” said Ludlow.
So the pitch right there now is like Wembley compared to those pitches. For us, it’s still a positive. Even though it’s not going to have the arena that we’ve played in tonight, it’s still going to be a great environment for us.”
Playing at lower capacity venues isn’t out of the ordinary for the Wales Women’s side, they have previously played at Haverfordwest County’s Bridge Meadow Stadium.
Risca United’s Ystrad Mynach also played venue to Wales Women’s 3-1 friendly win over Northern Ireland, where Jess Fishlock scored on her 100th cap for the Wales women.
The Cardiff City Stadium, which held Wales’ first home Qualifier is unavailable due to the Stereophonics playing there.
