Monmouth Town appoint Newport County coach Nicky Morgan

Welsh Football League Division Two side Monmouth Town have announced Nicky Morgan as their new first team manager.

The Newport County coach joins the Kingfishers after Ross Kennedy left his role as manager, following the clubs demotion to Division Two, after finishing outside the relegation spots last season.

Brian Bond who has been appointed as the clubs new chairman, replacing David Uttley met with Morgan to discuss his appointment.

“As soon as I had the phone call from Monmouth I got excited with the prospect of managing such a great Welsh League club,” said Morgan.

“After meeting the new chairman Brian Bond on Tuesday night I was sold on the clubs ambitions to get back with the big boys in the Welsh Leagues.”

I’m looking to add to the very talented squad they have up at Monmouth and I’m sure my links to Newport County will be vital in doing that this season.”

Morgan’s last role in the Welsh League was as manager with Chepstow Town, after previously spending time with Newport YMCA. Chepstow finished third in Division Three of the Welsh League, in the season that Morgan was in charge.

He returns to the Welsh League Football setup having spent a year away working under former Undy Athletic manager Mike Flynn in the English Football League as first team assistant coach.

“I spent the last year working very close to Mike Flynn, Wayne Hatswell and Lenny Lawrence at Newport, what I’ve taken on board and learnt will be vital in not just my success but also the clubs success going forward.”

Joining the coaching staff at Monmouth Town with Morgan is Andrew Delve, who joins as goalkeeping coach and assistant. Delve was a former player under Morgan at Chepstow and has playing experience with Carmarthen Town and Newport County.

Morgan’s first task is to manage the Kingfishers in a pre-season friendly tomorrow against Division Two champions Llantwit Major at Frampton Lane.
