Cardiff Metropolitan University manager Christian Edwards says winning was all that mattered after their opening day victory.

Two early goals from Eliot Evans and Dan Spencer helped met on their way for a 2-1 win over Newtown, as they rode out the wave of attacks from the Robins.

The Archers were forced to sit deep for large spells of the game, with just a few half chances in the second half, after an end-to-end first half.

“I think every manager in the league wanted three points this weekend.

Some will get them, others wouldn’t, some want it with flare, this one is all about winning and for the rest of the night we want to win and we will take that on the first day of the season.”

Christian Edwards was “happy” with how his team performed and drew lot of encouragement from the game. In the previous meeting, Met surrendered a two-goal lead to the Robins, but this time stood tall to secure three points.

“In previous years we would have lost that game, however, Newtown put us under a lot of pressure but we defended resolutely and we limited them to kind of shots from distance nothing from really in close.” “

We will learn and benefit from the experience and we will turn it into a positive.”

“We had young lads that have come into the team, particularly Alex Lang in goal who was very dominant, I thought he was excellent saving the penalty.

I thought he dealt with the long ball very well.”

Cardiff Met handed debuts to three new players in Alex Lang from Swansea City, Matt Neale from Bournemouth and Sam Snaith who played with Adam Roscrow at Llantwit Major.

Substitutes Esa Aalto and Guto Williams were unused substitutes.

They have only been with us for six to eight weeks and they played really well. It’s been a real positive.” “The whole group have worked very hard and we put a lot of emphasis on fitness.

We put a lot of emphasis and we work a lot on team shape and we had tired boys on the game tonight.”

“We had them on the training ground three hours last night but that’s what you want from your players.

We want to put them under stress and there was evidence of that in our play in the second half.”

“But, give credit to Newtown who have travelled a long way on a Friday night and they gave us a good game.”

The Archers had six senior players missing through injury including Adam, Brad Woolridge, Will Fuller, Rhydian Morgan, Charlie Corsby and Joel Edwards but the Met boss felt nothing should be taken away from the lads who deputised against Newtown.

“But don’t distract that from the fact the boys who played, I thought they did really well under difficult circumstances and you are not able to dominate games at home all the time.”

“Newtown, like I said, put us under a lot of pressure and we dealt with that and we’ve come away with three points.”

Cardiff Met next play Aberystwyth Town in their first away game of the season on Friday 17th which will be televised on the Sgorio cameras and Edwards wants to see his side continue from where they left off.

“It will be difficult against a good Aberystwyth team who have gone and upset early season favourites in Llandudno, an old club of mine.”

“It will be a good experience, live on television and we have a couple of bodies back by then.”
