Bangor City Ladies have resigned from the North Wales Women’s League this week, just before the new 2018/19 Division One season was set to kick-off.
After finishing a respectable fourth last season, and starting pre-season with the marquee signing of Katie Bowie from Premier League Llandudno, the news has come as a shock, with the Nantporth outfit expected to challenge for the league this season.
Over eight members of last season’s squad have departed the club, with no indication as to why there has been a mass exodus of players from the North Wales Women’s League side.
The formation of Bethesda Ladies, along with some shrewd recruiting by a resurgent Amlwch has seen a number of players move on, as Cerys Gadd, Lexi Crawley, Paige Musgrave and Sara Furlong all returned to the club.
Benefitting most are Welsh Premier side Caernarfon Town, who’ve snapped up the sides biggest names, including the aforementioned Bowe, along with last seasons prolific goal scorer, Ceri Lois.
It will be a bitter disappointment to the female football scene in North Wales, after changes were made to the setup this year as the NEWFA took over administration of the league earlier this summer.
Bangor were set to be joined by fellow clubs Northop Hall, Airbus, Llanfair United, Bethel, Pwllheli, Denbigh Town, Prestatyn and Kinmel Bay for the forthcoming season, but the league will now be without Bangor’s presence.
No official statement has been made by the club yet outlining the reasons for the decision.
