Wales defender Connor Roberts has spoken of the similarities between the two managers of his club and national sides.
The 23-year-old has been a mainstay in the Swans defence this season, playing in all sixteen league fixtures, as Swansea sit eighth in the Sky Bet Championship.
His performances for Graham Potter’s side have seen him become a regular for the national team, playing in all of Wales’ UEFA Nations League fixtures under Ryan Giggs.
Roberts said: “I see similarities between the gaffers at Swansea and at Wales. They’re hungry, they’re young and they give chances to youth.”
The Neath-born right-back has been part of somewhat of a youth revolution with Wales. Players like Ben Woodburn, David Brooks, Ethan Ampadu and Matthew Smith have become regular faces within the Welsh national team set-up, as Ryan Giggs makes stamps down his mark as manager.
Having played against Ireland, Denmark, Mexico, Spain and Uruguay, Roberts has felt he’s coped with the level of international football. Playing regularly for both club and country has put him in good stead.
He’s also been able to call upon Chris Gunter, six years his elder with 88 caps to his name as a player who has helped shape his Wales career.
“I’ve been decent I think when given the opportunities but I need to keep working hard and listen to what the gaffer and the experienced players around the squad are telling me and hopefully bring my Swansea form when I come away with Wales.”
Roberts made just three caps for the U19s and U21s but has already racked up six caps since making his debut earlier this year against Uruguay in the China Cup.
With four Premier League appearances under his belt for Swansea now, as well as becoming a regular in the Championship, Roberts is now looking to pull away from the young gun tag.
“I’m getting on a little bit now and I’m not considered as a young boy really so hopefully, I can keep helping the young players on as the experienced players are helping me.”
