Luke Gullick scored twice as Pontypridd Town came out on top in the relegation six-pointer with Taffs Well at Rhiw’r Ddar.
Gullick’s two goals which both came after half-time gave Lee Kendall’s side some breathing space in the battle at the bottom of Division One.
Pontypridd had the majority of the chances and wasn’t challenged much by Taffs Well, who before today had been unbeaten under caretaker manager Stevie Williams.
Long throw-ins were useful for Pontypridd. Captain Scott Hillman launched a number of throws into the box but both Lee Baldock and Luke Gullick both fired over in the opening moments.
Luke Sylvester made an important goal-line clearance to keep the score level after Jack Wheeler fired in a shot.
Lewis Baldwin almost doubled his goals account for Pontypridd but his low-driven free-kick was saved by the diving Glyn Garner.
Pontypridd’s top goalscorer Luke Gullick deservedly went ahead when he coolly finished past Glyn Garner from an Aiden Lewis through ball.
Moments later he almost scored a second after Lee Baldock’s well-worked cross was fired just over the bar.
Gullick was on the scoresheet again but in a controversial manner. Having kicked the ball out for a throw-in due to an injury, Ponty’s top scorer chased down Garner’s attempted clearance and was able to stroke home into an empty net.
He was denied his hat-trick in stoppage time when Glyn Garner made a save with his leg at the far post.
Pontypridd kept their clean sheet intact despite Taffs Well’s late pressure.
The Dragons move up to 12th after the victory. They move five points clear of the Wellmen although Taffs Well have two games in hand.
The victory relegated bottom side Ton Pentre who are now unable to catch anyone outside the bottom three following their 5-4 defeat to Afan Lido.
