Chelsea’s Ethan Ampadu has joined RB Leipzig on a season-long loan.
The 18-year-old has joined the Bundesliga side until the end of the season.
Ampadu recently played in the European Championship qualifiers for Wales and will now have a senior season of football under his belt.
Lampard explained to ChelseaFC.com, his decision to send Ampadu out on loan.
‘I tried to sign Ethan on loan at Derby last year so I’m a big fan, but with the minutes he played last year, in the interest of Ethan and of Chelsea, the idea he can play a lot of games somewhere could be good for him.
‘I really wanted to work with Ethan this year. That’s a slight disappointment, but it’s to benefit of him. In midfield and defence, we have a lot of quality, so each player is a case by case.”
Since joining Chelsea, he has made 12 appearances for the Blues, making seven starts. Ampadu featured for Chelsea in the Europa League, helping them too glory.
Ampadu has been playing for Wales at international level since 2016. He made 13 senior appearances for Football League side Exeter City before making the move to West London.
Leipzig finished third in the Bundesliga last season and are automatic entries to this season’s UEFA Champions League.
