Newport County sign Welsh right-back Liam Shephard

Newport County have signed Welsh defender Liam Shephard on a one-year deal.

The 25-year-old was released by Forest Green Rovers earlier this summer but has found a new home in League Two.

In the last few weeks, he has been on trial with the Exiles and is now in contention to make his competitive debut against Swansea City on Saturday after putting pen-to-paper with the club.

Shephard’s move to Rodney Parade sees him become the third in his family to join after father Gary and brother Corey.

“I’ve enjoyed playing with the group in pre-season and the lads have made it easy for me to settle in,” said the right-back.

“It’s been a long wait to get back to playing, so I’m delighted that the new season is just around the corner.

“The manager has been great with me and I’m looking forward to working under him.”

Commenting on his latest addition, manager Mike Flynn said: “Liam has impressed me during his time with us in pre-season and I’m really pleased that we’ve been able to get this deal over the line.

“He’s at a great age, knows all about this league and has a lot of experience which is always a big bonus.

“He operates well defensively and I feel he can offer us a lot going forward this season too.”

A two-time Wales Under-21 international, Shephard began his career at Cardiff City before moving to Swansea City.

During his time with the Swans, he had three loan spells at Yeovil Town, making 72 appearances for the Glovers.

His permanent departure from the Liberty Stadium saw him join Forest Green Rovers in 2018.

In a two-year spell at The New Lawn, Shephard made 67 appearances for the Nailsworth based side.
