Five leave Penybont as pair rejoin Merthyr Town

Penybont have seen five first-team players depart in the last week with two rejoining Merthyr Town. 

Ian Traylor and Matthew Harris have both returned to Penydarren Park for the upcoming season in the Southern League. Another former Martyr in Ismail Yakubu is another departure from Penybont, as well as the exit of Connor Davies.

Harris, who spent two years at the SDM Glass Stadium, joined the Bont after their promotion to the Cymru Premier.

The 27-year-old made a total of 42 league appearances, scoring three goals in the process. 

“I just want to say a huge thank you to Penybont for a great two seasons,” said Harris in his parting statement to the club.

“They are a fantastic club of brilliant people. I have met friends for life and wish all the lads and everyone involved, the best of luck for the future.”

Traylor, also reuniting with Dean Clarke, leaves Penybont after only a handful of appearances at the SDM Glass Stadium.

The 32-year-old made just six appearances under Rhys Griffiths and only one was a start and scored just one goal. He hadn’t played a game for Penybont since mid December. 

Completing the list of former Merthyr players to leave Penybont is Ismail Yakubu, who is moving on after one season. 

Joining in September 2020, Yakubu appeared 21 times for Penybont, helping them to a fourth-placed finish.

Connor Davies, signed following his release from Cardiff City, has also opted to move on. The 19-year-old made 24 appearances as a right-back, starting 16 of those matches. 

Commenting on his departure from Bridgend, Davies tweeted: “I just want to thank everyone at Penybont for last season, and I wish you all the best in the future.”

Ioan Emanuel has also departed however his destination is unknown. The defender was part of their promotion-winning team and made six appearances this season, mainly as a substitute. 

Despite a number of departures, Penybont have secured the services of; Ashley Evans, Ben Ahmun, Kane Owen, Kostya Georgievsky, Mael Davies, Nathan Wood and Sam Snaith for the 2021/22 season.
