Newtown move to sign Shrewsbury Town starlet James Rowland ahead of Conference League tie

Newtown have completed the signing of Shrewsbury Town academy product, James Rowland, ahead of their UEFA Europa Conference League campaign.

The Robins are due to take on Dundalk at Oriel Park on Thursday evening and now Rowland could be in consideration to make his competitive debut against the League of Ireland outfit.

The 19-year-old midfielder from Walsall began his career within the West Bromwich Albion youth set up before signing professional terms at the Shropshire outfit in 2018.

He made two first-team appearances in the Papa John’s EFL Trophy in his first season, making his professional debut from the bench at Gresty Road, against Crewe Alexandra.

In his second term, he made his third and final appearance for the Shrews’ first XI in a 4-0 Carabao Cup defeat at home to Rotherham United. Despite the scoreline, he was named Shrewsbury’s man of the match that evening.

Rowland has Cymru Premier experience, having spent the second half of the 2019-20 season on loan at Aberystwyth Town, featuring three times in the league and once in the FAW Cup, before Covid curtailed the Welsh season.

In 2020-21 he joined Leicestershire-based Southern League Premier Division side Barwell on loan, where he featured five times in league and FA Trophy, before being released by his parent club at the conclusion of his contract.

He joins the Latham Park outfit after impressing in a trial period, which included a goal against local rivals Guilsfield in a 5-0 friendly win last week.

He becomes the fourth permanent addition after Naim Arsan, Aaron Williams and Callum Roberts all joined the club ahead of their European journey.
