Five goals at Aberbargoed’s Recreational Ground saw a strong Pontymister side progress to the first round of the JD Welsh Cup, overcoming a youthful Buds team on home turf.
The home side took the lead on 16 minutes through Jordan Price’s first goal for the club but the lead was short-lived as Joshua Mclaughlin grabbed the equaliser four minutes later.
Chances came and went for both sides for the rest of the half but a mix up at the back for the Buds saw Pontymister take the lead on 43 minutes through Warren Derraven’s first of two goals during the match.
An end to end start to the second half entertained fans of both sides but it was the away side who took a firm grip on the tie with Derraven’s second of the game, though the home side will feel hard done by as they were denied an offside call moments before the goal.
Jack Tovey wrapped up the tie for Pontymister on the 80th minute, with Aberbargoed having a 93rd minute penalty saved to end a disappointing day for the boys in red and black.
A tough one to take for Aberbargoed’s young side but one that will be a great experience to look back on for those involved, Pontymister will be delighted in securing their place for the first round of Wales’ most prestigious cup competition.
