Ammanford 2-4 Taffs Well: Wellmen rock Ammanford at the Rec

Taffs Well provided a shock as they defeated Ammanford 4-2 at the Recreation Ground to claim their first victory of the season.

Marcus Jones put the Wellmen on their way with a fine strike to open the scoring. Summer recruit Jan Maertins then netted in the first half before quickly adding another early in the second. Jamie Owen added a fourth to really quieten the home faithful.

Captain for the day Lee Trundle pulled one back for the home side before Tristan Jenkins added another goal to his tally but it wasn’t enough.

Craig Sampson’s side came away as well deserved winners, putting in a top performance against one of the early pacesetters.

Marcus Jones got the game off to a flyer with an early goal, by scoring a wonderful strike from outside the box which found the top right corner.

Ammanford were favourites before the game after starting the season with two wins, despite this they couldn’t get going.

The slow start really got to Gruff Harrison’s side and Craig Morris had to pull off a good save after dealing with a strike from David Lyon.

Ammanford’s Lee Trundle almost got the leveler with a free-kick just going past the post. From this chance, they gained some momentum and had a few chances to get a goal but the well-organised defence kept the home attack quiet.

Just after the half-hour mark, Taffs Well doubled their lead, with a beautifully whipped-in cross from David Lyon who picked out the German youngster Maertin in the middle of the box and gently tapped it into the net.

Half time couldn’t come quick enough for Ammanford and knew that a lot of work had to be done if they had a chance.

Despite this Taffs Well started as they ended the first half and scored their third of the night, where a lovely weighted pass found Maertin who chipped the stranded Craig Morris for his second goal in the colours of Taffs Well.

A fourth was added just before the hour where a picture-perfect free-kick was scored by Jamie Owen, who lifted it over the wall and into the top corner.

After this Ammanford were fired up and was looking for a way back into the game, Jenkins came close not long after but his shot was tipped over the bar.

A penalty was awarded to Ammanford after their player was brought down in the box, Lee Trundle stood up but missed his initial shot but the follow-up was then converted.

This then fired up the Black and White army, who had a couple of chances to get another goal.

Eventually, they were rewarded when a lovely run from goal-hungry Jenkins got past the defence and smashed it into the bottom corner with a few minutes remaining.

However, this was proven not enough as the whistle had blown for the end of the game and the away side were victorious.
