Cardiff Met 0-2 Haverfordwest County: Fawcett and Lewis continue Bluebirds’ fine form

Haverfordwest County defeat Cardiff Metropolitan 2-0 at Cyncoed Campus as Ben Fawcett and Kieran Lewis both score in the second half.

The away side had the upper hand for most of the game but failed to make their domination pay until the last 20 minutes.

The first clear cut chances came after ten minutes, both to the away side. Alhagi Touray Sisay managed to keep the ball in play and squared it to Fawcett, whose shot was saved by Lang’s feet. Sisay was then played through on goal and was left with a one-on-one with Alex Lang. The striker attempted to slot the ball past Lang but the goalkeeper reacted well to save with his feet again.

The only opportunity Met got in the opening half hour was from a Haverfordwest mistake. Ricky Watts tried to pass the ball back to Wojciech Gajda but didn’t get enough weight on it, but the goalkeeper managed to get to the ball before Roscrow pounced.

It wasn’t until the last five minutes of the first half that the home side really got going. Eliot Evans tested Gajda with a powerful effort from outside the box, but the goalkeeper dealt with it comfortably. Gajda was less comfortable two minutes later, however, as he missed a cross that was played into the box. Luckily for him, Jazz Richards was there to spare his blushes and clear the danger.

Haverfordwest started the second half as they started the first, with a high tempo and creating a few chances. Jack Wilson played himself into space on the edge of the box, but opted to shoot instead of pass to a team-mate, and the effort was wide.

Touray Sisay then got another golden opportunity. He was played through behind the defence and was left with Williams in support and only Lang in front of him. His effort was weak however, and Lang saved it easily.

After this early flurry, the home side regained their footing and created some chances of their own. Emlyn Lewis headed wide from a free-kick, and Liam Warman then fired wide from close range.

With 20 minutes left on the clock, the deadlock was finally broken. Alex Lang’s goal-kick was intercepted by Touray Sisay who headed it to the path of Ben Fawcett. He controlled it well with his first touch before taking a shot on the half volley, which flew past Lang and into the goal.

Met piled on the pressure after the opening goal, although this didn’t translate into clear chances. Haverfordwest then exploited this pressure by counterattacking for their second goal. Touray Sisay played a one-two with his strike partner Fawcett, before laying it off to Kieran Lewis who fired home to secure the victory for Haverfordwest.

After that result, Haverfordwest have lifted out of the relegation zone to 10th place, whilst Cardiff Met have dropped one place to fifth.

Player of the Match

Alhagi Touray Sisay – Haverfordwest

Whilst the striker did miss two chances which he should have done better with, he made up for it by setting up Haverfordwest’s two goals. He was Haverfordwest’s main attacking outlet, and caused plenty of problems for the Met defence.
