Former Cyncoed and Cardiff Met star Alice Griffiths joins Southampton

Six-time Wales international Alice Griffiths has joined Southampton from Bridgwater United.

Griffiths joins a Saints team who sit second in the National League Southern Premier, with two games in hand, having won all seven of their games so far this season.

“I’m really happy to be here,” she told Southampton’s official website. “It’s been quite a quick turnaround but I can’t wait to get started.

“I’ve had a look around the club and when I saw what they had to offer with the staff and the facilities, the players, I knew it was the club I wanted to join.

“I’m a defensive midfielder who likes to break up play. I like to play direct passes forward and get the team on the front foot.

“Right now I’m looking to settle in at Southampton, build with this club and keep developing myself as a player.”

The 20-year-old began her career at Cyncoed (now Pontypridd Town) before joining Cardiff Met for the 2018/19 season, where she won a domestic treble.

She made her international debut back in 2017 under Jayne Ludlow in a 2019 World Cup qualifying against Kazakhstan.

Saints boss Marieanne Spacey-Cale is delighted to have made Griffiths her fifth signing of the season.

“Alice is a player we’ve looked at for a little while now. She’s a really exciting talent.

“She seems more mature than her age on the pitch. She’s come in, got involved and fitted in really nicely within the squad.

“For such a young player she’s so experienced. As we grow we want players to grow with us and with Alice you can see her future being with us and being part of something special.”

Griffiths only joined Bridgewater United at the start of the season, having left Championship side Charlton in the summer.
