Barry Town United and Penybont produced a drab goalless draw at Jenner Park on Friday night in the Cymru Premier.
After Penybont’s 4-0 victory last week, Barry will be delighted to gain a point, but it was a game that neither team deserved to win.
The result means both teams stay where they are in the table; Barry in tenth and Penybont in second.
The first opportunity of the match fell to the hosts. Marcus Day played a well-timed through ball to the feet of Kayne McLaggon. The Barry captain shot as he turned, but Ashley Morris got down well to turn the ball behind.
After that, it was Penybont who had the lion’s share of possession and they had two decent chances to take the lead.
Mael Davies’ cross was met by the foot of Nathan Wood, but Kelland Absalom spread himself out well and managed to save well from point-blank range.
It was sloppy Barry defending that lead to Bont’s second opportunity. A poor pass from Luke Cooper found Kane Owen, and his long-range effort dipped just over the bar.
Day had the first opportunity of the second half. McLaggon went on a driving run through the spine of Penybont and laid it off to Day, whose fizzing effort was expertly fingertipped over the bar by Morris.
The rest of the half was not one of excitement. Both sides were content to sit off each other, waiting for a mistake, but a mistake was not forthcoming.
McLaggon went close a minute from the end. His jinked his way into the middle and got a shot off, but the foot of Morris was the only thing to deny him.
Ryan Reynolds hit the side netting in added time for Bont, but it ended 0-0.
Barry’s final game of the first phase will be at home to Caernarfon Town, while Penybont will host Flint Town.
