Dinas Powys 1-2 Port Talbot Town: Steelmen end two-year wait for a win

Port Talbot Town tasted the sweet winning feeling for the first time since March 2020 as they beat Dinas Powys 2-1 in the Ardal South West.

Aidan Chappell-Smith opened the scoring just before the interval and then Lewis Davies put Port Talbot in dreamland with a second. 

David Shallis pulled a goal back but Samuel Jacobsen’s red card for an off-the-ball incident made any comeback unlikely.

Powys will feel hard done by after creating lots of good chances but the Steelmen won’t be concerned as they ended a barren winless run.


Dinas had an early chance from Tom Fry’s corner. David Shallis directed the ball to Jacob Flower who shot just wide.

The hosts had the better of the opening minutes and a good cross into the near post found Lenny Norris. Norris headed at goal but was denied by a save from Steffan Rogers.

The hosts were looking for the opening goal and had another chance as Tom Fry put a shot over the bar from outside the box.

After absorbing pressure Port Talbot went on the hunt for a goal. Jake Barrow heading just wide from a good ball from the left.

Tom Fry forced Rogers into action again as the Port Talbot keeper had to turn his low shot around the post.

It was all Dinas as the half moved on, attacking from the left Dinas found Jacob Flower free in the box. Flower took a touch before shooting which gave Rogers time to throw his body in front of the ball. A first-time shot may have given Dinas the lead.

Soon after Dinas found Flower in space again but this time he sent his shot wide.

As the half drew to a close Port Talbot came forward. Alex Brayley shot over and Ross Davies forced Henri Phillips into a save.

Port Talbot went into the break ahead after capitalising on a mistake in the Dinas defence. Failing to clear their lines Dinas gave the ball away and after a quick pass into Chappell-Smith, he fired past Phillips.

Half Time: Dinas Powys 0-1 Port Talbot Town.

Dinas came out second half looking to get back in the game. Tom Fry sent a good ball into the box which defected off a Port Talbot player and looked to be heading in but was cleared away on the line.

With a lead to hold on to Port Talbot dug in and Dinas struggled to break through their lines. Rogers again was called into action to save a long-range effort.

Port Talbot were growing in confidence as the game went on and extended their lead in the 65th minute. Aidan Chappell-Smith putting a corner right in front of the goal at the back post. Port Talbot captain Lewis Davies was there to tap in.

Dinas made a double change as they looked to rescue something. Samuel Jacobsen and Hugh Coles coming on. A high ball behind for Coles shortly after coming on almost found the sub but run out.

Dinas got a goal back after a scramble in the Port Talbot box, Shallis smashing a shot through a crowd to set up a grandstand finish.

High Coles was played in behind the defence but Rogers was alive and dived on the goal at the feet of Coles.

With free minutes to go Dinas were awarded a free kick on halfway. As they were setting up the ref showed a red card to Samuel Jacobsen leaving Dinas with ten players.

Even being a player down Dinas had a chance to draw the game. Find Challis free in the box, he fired a shot over.

The final minutes saw Port Talbot run down the clock with the ball deep into the Dinas half.
