Cefn Druids have been banned from making any signings for the next two transfer windows, after being hit with a transfer ban.
The ban came into effect in January 2023, and so they will be unable to sign players in the summer and next January. The Ancients, who are appealing the decision, have been charged with breaching FIFA transfer guidelines in the 2021/22 season.
The Druids finished bottom of the 2021/22 Cymru Premier, finishing on nine points in 32 matches, and won just two league matches. It was the second successive season that they finished bottom of the league, after staying up in the 2020/21 season after there was no relegation.
A club statement posted on the official club website Tuesday, January 31, read: “Despite the robust recruitment procedures in place at the club, the ban is in relation to the former management team and club administrators signing an international player in season 2021/22 without following those procedures and breaching FIFA transfer guidelines. The club has appealed the decision and is awaiting further clarification before deciding on the next course of action to be taken.
“We are disappointed to find ourselves in this position when the error should have been avoided by following our internal policy by those that know better and have the experience to properly handle club transfers.
“We will announce all updates on the club’s appeal when the outcome is reached.”
The Druids are currently fourth in the Cymru North and won 4-3 in their recent match against Mold Alexandra, where manager Neil Ashton was registered as an unused substitute goalkeeper, with just two other players listed as backup options for the third game in a row.
Ashton, a former Wrexham defender and Europa Conference League play-off winner with the Druids, took charge in the summer succeeding Andy Turner.
Several players left The Rock in January with Cameron Dutton, Eric Durnell, and Osian Williams all reuniting with former assistant Jordan Hadaway.
