Swansea University pick up point at Cwmbran Celtic in pursuit of Cymru South survival

Both goalkeepers were the heroes for their teams in a game of very few chances which ended with Swansea University still firmly in the relegation zone with only two games left to play.

Cwmbran has failed to beat Swansea in any of their meetings in the past three seasons but the visitors started the day in fifteenth place in the league so it was anybody’s guess as to who would come out victorious at the MotorPark Arena.

Despite coming into this game on a run of seven games without a win, Swansea Uni started the game the better with Joshua Cole in particular, impressing as he had a number of runs in the first half that caused trouble for the Celtic defence.

The first major chance of the game fell to Tom Meechan who latched on to the ball in the six-yard box and had a good first-time effort but it was saved well by the Uni keeper Luke Martin using his legs.

The best chance of the first half came for Tom Johnstone who had a very close-range header and must have thought he had scored but Lewis Watkins reacted instantly to save with both hands to keep his clean sheet.

Celtic had the last good chance of the half as Andrew Larcombe got onto a corner from the right-hand side and his header was saved by Luke Martin to end the half scoreless.

As few chances as there were in the first half, there were much fewer in a very quiet second half. In fact, the first good chance of the half didn’t arrive until the eighty-second minute and came for the University side. Harry Huddart’s long effort stung the hands of Lewis Watkins who could only parry to the feet of Adam Morgan who possibly should have scored but Watkins managed to clear the ball out of play to keep the game scoreless.

Despite Swansea doing all the pressing as the game moved towards its end. It was Cwmbran who had a great chance in the ninety-third minute to steal the victory. Meechan ran down the right-hand side and he ended up one on two but managed to cross into the box towards Connor whose shot was blazed over the bar. That effort summed up this game a lot of hard work but very little quality.

This result keeps Cwmbran in 8th place but really heightens Swansea’s relegation fears as with only two games left to play they are four points from safety.
However, the swans will need a miracle to stay up as Taffs Well the team in thirteenth have three games in hand on Swansea University.
