Pontypridd United take on Swansea University in an Adran Trophy Round of 16 matchup at the USW Sport Park.
With the draw pitting together two teams in contrasting form, a cup upset could well be on the cards in the valleys.
In the Adran Premier, things are looking bleak for Ponty. Eight losses on the trot means they sit marooned at the bottom of the table on zero points. A 3-1 defeat to TNS last time out further compiling their misery. However, cup competitions have provided a source of solace for the Dragons.
In the Bute Energy Welsh Cup, they’ve recorded a 9-0 win over Penclawdd and a 17-0 win against Aberaman. This will be their first game in this season’s Adran Trophy. Last year saw them get knocked out in the quarter-finals by TNS.
By contrast, Swansea University are enjoying a fine season. Sitting third in the Adran South, they’ve recorded some impressive results and only have two losses to their name: the same amount as Cascade. They had to battle through the group stages of the Adran Trophy to reach this stage of the competition. Despite losing to Briton Ferry in their first game, wins against Cascade and Cwmbran Celtic propelled them to second place and to a spot in the final 16.
These two sides actually met at the same stage of the competition last year. A goal just after the hour mark by Efa Preece Jones sealed a 1-0 win for Pontypridd. Will it be the same outcome this time round, or will the students get revenge?
