Aberystwyth remain in a relegation scrap after falling to a 2-1 defeat to Barry Town at Jenner Park. A good win for Barry as they say goodbye to stalwart Jordan Cotterill who will leave at the end of the season.
Sam Snaith put Barry ahead after 11 minutes with his fifth goal of the season. Billy Kirkman equalised for Aber in the 64th minute to the joy of the travelling Aber fans. The visitor’s pushed for a second but it was the hosts who got the second in the 83rd minute thanks to Ollie Hulbert.
Barry remain in ninth place in the JD Cymru Premier table but Aber will head into the final week in a three team battle to stay up. Aber are 10th with 24 points so a win against Pontypridd will ensure they stay safe.
Aber made a bright start and Steffan Davies wanted an early penalty after he was bundled over in the box.
Despite their bright start Aber found themselves behind after just 11 minutes. San Snaith with a coll finish from close range from Callum Sanity’s pass.
Snaith went close to a second goal when his effort hit on turn was pushed past the post by Aber keeper Dave Jones.
Barry kept the pressure on as they looked for the second goal. Jordan Cotterill curling a shot around the post.
Dave Jones was needed again this time to save from Jamie Veale’s well stuck free kick.
Half Time: Barry Town 1-0 Aberystwyth Town
Aber started the second half quickly as David Evans almost put them level. Davies got the ball in the box and managed to poke it past the keeper, but it was cleared before it could cross the line.
The Green and Blacks did manage to get the ball in the net ten minutes into the second half but the flag was up quickly and the goal was not given.
Aber pressure told and they won a free kick on the right of the box. Billy Kirkman stood over it and curled the ball though the crowd of players in the area into the far corner.
Barry then almost re took the lead when Cotterill hit the crossbar. Jamie Veale sent a corner to the edge of the box finding Cotterill. Cotterill struck the ball and as Jenner Park held its breath as the ball sailed towards goal only to cannon off the bar.
Cotterill was replaced by Kayne McLaggon and he had a hand in Barry’s winning goal. After a good low ball into the box McLaggon stuck a shot that was saved only for Ollie Hulbert to run in and sweep the ball home.
