Houldsworth becomes a joint manager at Newport City

Sam Houldsworth has departed Pontypridd Town in order to take the position of joint manager at Newport City, alongside Ben Gifford, who has managed the club since the summer.

It is a move that will see Pontypridd lose the man who has helped the club to where it is today, overseeing a massive rebuild on the squad working alongisde Dominic and Damien Broad.

Houldsworth had a fantastic relationship with the players and worked closely with the youth team, helping bring local players into the Pontypridd Town squad from their academy.

Sam will know the strength and weaknesses of the Newport City squad as his previous side and current side met in the Welsh League opener, in which Pontypridd were 6-1 winners over Sam’s current side.

It will be a case of building on the result that The Steelmen picked up on Saturday, where they won their first game of the season at Abergavenny Town, despite being 2-0 down at the break.

With the club knocked out of the JD Welsh Cup and the Welsh Football League Cup, Sam’s first competitive involvement at the club will be on the 8th October as Newport will face AFC Llwydcoed. It allows all focus to remain on the league, where the objective will be to steer clear of the relegation zone.
