#JDWelshCup Treowen Stars 1 Ton Pentre 2

Treowen Stars’ recent form, including a surprise win over Risca United in the previous round, suggested a Welsh Cup upset might be on the cards at Bush Park.  First Division Ton Pentre were the visitors to the Stars’ hill-top home and with only one win on the road this season the Bulldogs’ fans were wary of the threat from the Third Division hosts.

Both sides won dangerous early free-kicks. But whereas Ton keeper Joe Massaro held Treowen’s second minute effort, barely a minute later at the other end home keeper Josh Archer could only get his fingertips to Liam Hutchinson’s shot as it flew into the top corner.

Treowen worked hard to overcome the early setback but their good work after the goal was undone when they conceded in first half stoppage time, Sam Small capitalising on some hesitant defending to run clear and beat Archer.

Ton looked comfortable for most of the second half and there was little to worry their fans until the closing quarter of an hour.  Persistence paid off for Treowen in the 77th minute – keeper Massaro made a fine double save, but couldn’t prevent Ross Brown’s third attempt.  This ensured a lively closing spell, with the Bulldogs’ goal surviving some late pressure, but Lee Phillips’ side held on to secure their place in Round 3.
