Meet the Mid Wales striker with more goals than games

At the young tender age of 20, Richard Davies has scored over a half century of goals in just 50 games.

Signed in a car park in Newtown on the recommendation of Berriew player Karl Seliaerts, the Berriew manager David Jones had not seen him actually play.

He was originally played at centre back before being tried as a central midfielder and then as a winger. An injury to main forward Jonny Roberts meant that Berriew had just one forward, step forward utility man Richard Davies who was played there due to his quickness, directness and his ability to beat players.

The choice to play Richard as a striker proved to be a smart one, as Berriew claimed the Spar Mid Wales Division Two title, as well as the ER Jenkins Cup. It also brought the best out of the former Newtown youth as he scored 26 goals in 27 games last season in all competitions.

This season he has scored 29 goals in 23 games including a hatrick last weekend against former Premier League side Welshpool Town as Berriew sit top of Division One. He is up against Carno’s Peter Rees and Llanrhaeadr’s Iwan Matthews for the Mid-Wales League Golden Boot.

Manager David Jones paid tribute to the man in form.

“Richard is an important member of our side, the way we play suits his game and he benefits from that.”

With such individual performances, comes interest in a player, especially with clubs who can offer a higher level of football but Jones is sure that Richard will stay with the club.

“I am confident he will remain at the club for the foreseeable future, he is enjoying his football. We have a good team spirit and togetherness here, in which he is part of.”

Richard won an individual honour for the month of November, winning Spar Mid-Wales Division One Player of the Month.
