JON HOOD: THE THREE POINTS ARE FOR THE COACHING STAFF

Despite relegation from the Welsh Premier League, Jon Hood stayed with Port Talbot and yesterday he scored the winner against his old side Afan Lido.

A volley early on in the sixth minute was enough for Port Talbot to earn the bragging rights in the Derby yesterday, in which the travelling supporters revelled in, with jubilant celebrations at the full time whistle.

“I think anyone would be happy if they scored a goal like that especially in a local Derby.”

An assist from midfielder Corey Thomas who left the club last year to play in Australia, meant that Jon Hood knew he was scoring.

“It was a good ball, Casey put it on a plate for me and as soon as it left my foot, I knew it was going in.”

Of course in a derby, there are always bragging rights and with two red cards in the fixture for the home side.

“There’s not much that needs to be said when it comes to Port Talbot against Afan Lido, the heart takes over and it becomes down to who wants it more. I think the boys showed great character and the three points were fully deserved.”

Before the game, the club narrowly sat outside the relegation zone, with more being expected of Port Talbot but this win is for the coaching staff says Hood.

“It means the world for anyone to score the winner, the coaching staff are under a bit of pressure at the moment and I don’t think they should be. It’s us, the players who are on the field who can do something about it. That goal and the three points were for the coaching staff.”

Port Talbot host Cwmbran Celtic who beat league leaders Goytre on Saturday, Hood wants the same performance as the Lido one.

“It gives us a massive boost. I think we can click on from here now, get a good run and climb the ladder. We need to turn up every week, it’s important we stay together and stay fully focused on the job ahead. We need as many people there supporting us a we can! Week in wee out, home and away.”
