Barry’s title hopes boosted by shock Taffs Well victory

A surprising result in the Welsh Football League Division One could have major implications on the title race.

11th placed Taffs Well beat 2nd placed title contenders Goytre 4-2 on Wednesday evening, in a game that leaves Goytre five points behind front runners Barry with just four games to go.

To make Barry’s position even stronger, Goytre must face third placed Penybont, who are also in the title race joint on points with Goytre.

The victory will come as a shock to many, with a strong Goytre side hosting Taffs Well who were 15 points below them in 11th before the game.

Marcus Jones opened the scoring for Taffs Well before assisting the second scored by Tim Parker. Goytre replied by reducing the deficit to 2-1, but this failed to stop the visitors in the second half.

A third Taffs Well goal came from Anthony Burnett, before Marcus Jones topped off a memorable night by securing a brace to send Taffs 4-1 ahead.

Goytre brought the game to 4-2, but it was too little too late for the title chasers as Taffs Well held on for a massive three points.

The result far from ends the title race with the top three all having four games to play, but with a five point lead going into the end of season run, the WFL1 Championship is Barry Town’s to lose.
