Lake and Evans take Player of the Year gongs in the Welsh Premier Women’s League awards

Cardiff City’s Shannon Evans and Swansea City’s Ellie Lake have been awarded Player of the Year and Young Player of the Year respectively.

The awards, which were hosted by EatSleepFootyRepeat’s Alex Feeney and former Wales international Owain Tudur-Jones, at the St David Park’s Hotel, Chester.

Evans finished 5th in the Welsh Premier Women’s League this season with Cardiff City, whilst Ellie Lake finished second with Swansea City, just five points behind winners Cardiff Metropolitan.

The Cardiff City star was pipped right at the end to her second consecutive Golden Boot, by Abergavenny’s Lyndsey Davies but was voted as Player of the Season, by managers in the league. Davies received her Golden Boot winners award.

Ellie’s teammate, Jodie Passmore was given the WPWL Club Woman of the Year.

The forward tweeted her delight at being nominated for the award.

Defender Lake received her first Wales senior call-up back in February. She has captained her national team at Wales U19s level and was part of the side that qualified for the Elite Round of the UEFA U19 Championships.

She earnt praise from national team manager Jayne Ludlow who said: “Ellie is a new player in our environment.”

“She’s enjoying playing regular football and is competing extremely well at that level.

She’s a key member of our Under-19 Elite phase group as well, so it’s nice to see younger players developing within Wales.”

It’s the third award of the season for Lake, who picked up Young Player of the Year and Achievement of the Year, in her first ever season with Swansea City, after making her move from Cardiff City Ladies.
