STM Sports 2-1 Penydarren BGC: Conteh fires STM into first ever FAW Trophy Semi

A brace from Lamin Conteh was enough to seal a famous victory for STM Sports as they progressed into the Semi-Finals of the FAW Trophy for the first time in the club’s history.

Despite a wonder goal from Penydarren BGC striker Joshua Brogden in the 25th minute it wasn’t enough to see The Bont Playing Fields side seek a second victory over the Cardiff based side in over  the space of 14 days.

So, it was another week in the capital for Kerry Mullins’ side as they travelled to STM Sports this time in the FAW Trophy after the scheduled fixture at The Bont Playing fields was rearranged due to the adverse weather conditions.

The deadlock was broken at Cardiff University Sports Fields in the 5th minute through STM Sports winger Lamin Conteh after a great lofted ball from Hishi Lama picked out Conteh who made a great run in behind the Penydarren defence who then calmly slot home past the advancing Stephen Price.

Kerry Mullins’ side responded just 11 minutes later and what a goal it was from striker Joshua Brogden. He opened the scoring for Penydarren BGC last week and was at again after his tremendous effort fired into the roof of the STM net from 25 yards out. A great strike from the 25-year-old.

The visitors had a great chance to take the lead in the capital after Chris Hajgato gave a short pass back to Exauce Dimonekene which fell into the path of Adam Lewis who had all the time in the world to pick out the net but he could only manage to fire into the goalkeeper’s hand from close range. What a chance it was for Kerry Mullins’ side.

The spoils were shared going into the break with both teams looking strong as they were striving for a place in the Semi-Finals of the FAW Trophy.

The second half saw the visitors Penydarren BGC the more dominant side creating a few early opportunities. Firstly, from a Christopher Colvin header which was denied by goal line clearance and then an Alex Long effort which just whistled wide at the post.

But there was to be late drama in Llanrumney as Dale Gardiners’ side re-took the lead in the 82 minute after Penydarren BGC captain Alex long brought down Conteh just outside the box. From the resulting free-kick Conteh beat the defensive wall and hit a thunderous strike which flew into the top right corner past the stretching Price.

Kerry Mullins’ side couldn’t re create last weeks incredible victory this time but it has been another great run for the newly promoted Welsh League club.
