Conteh “delighted” after STM Sports beat Penydarren to reach semi finals of FAW Trophy

Lamin Conteh says he was “delighted” after STM Sports AFC beat Penydarren BGC to reach the semi finals of the FAW Trophy.

Conteh opened the scoring in the first five minutes before Josh Brogden equalised  eleven minutes later, as both sides went into half time all square.

The striker then netted again late in the second half to end a run of three consecutive defeats against Penydarren in cup competitions.

“That was a great result.” He said. “That felt amazing. Last week we lost again, then this week we tried and won the game. I’m delighted.”

“They’ve beaten us 3 times, winning against them is good, it boosts our confidence because they are a strong team, they play good football and we are happy that we’ve won today which is good.”

“It’s great for the club, we’ve never won a cup before, it will help to boost our confidence going into the next round. Hopefully we will win and progress from there.”

Conteh described how he took both of his goals.

“I saw Hishi and made the run, so he pinged the ball to me with my first touch with my left and finished with my left again, which is great seeing me score with my weaker foot.”

The second one came from a well taken free kick.

“I know I can hit the ball and when I hit that shot and it went in, It was amazing. I didn’t expect that goal, it was a great goal I’m happy with it.”

“Nice to see I scored two good goals to help my team win the game but the most important thing is to win the game.”

However after being booked early into the second half, the forward could have been shown a second yellow card for a high foot on Ben Gibbons.

“I was lucky.” He said. “I got the ball first before his leg. It was a bit of luck, I could have been sent off.”

Its been a long journey back for Conteh after coming back into the side after injury, but he told Y Clwb Pêl-Droed that  he’s getting back to his best and was full of praise for his teammates ahead of next Saturday’s home game against Abergavenny Town.

“Last season I got injured before the season end, which I was recovering through the start of the new season. I’m getting stronger and stronger, I’m getting better now. I’m feeling ok.

“It’s a great club, we all know each other, good players. It’s amazing playing with a team that is winning every week. That’s the main thing, playing for a team you enjoy. All the players know each other, they fight for each other, which is great.”

“If we keep this performance level we are just going to go higher and higher. I believe in my boys. We’ve got good players, we just need to keep that confidence.”
