Newport City announce the formation of Women’s team
Newport City have are to create a Women’s side for next season it has been announced.
Formerly known as Llanwern before rebranding in 2016, the club want to build on having just a side in Division Three of the Welsh League.
Having already had a Youth team confirmed for next season, the Gwent club proudly announced the formation of a Women’s team.
The Women’s side will be starting as a new team, meaning that they will be placed in the South Wales Women’s Girls League Division One.
In June of last year, the Welsh women’s side played a qualifying match against Russia at Newport Stadium, the home ground of Newport City.
Chairman Sam Houldsworth said: “Women’s football has been lifted to another scale since the success of the National team.
“We want to help provide opportunities for females within South Wales to enjoy playing football and to challenge themselves to help take the Newport City FC women’s team into the top division.”
The specific roles of the management team have yet to be finalised, however players have already shown their interest in joining the club.
Trials will be held to join the team at the end of June, with the date and times announced in the coming weeks.
