Gwent County League club Marshfield fold

Gwent County League side Marshfield have announced that they have folded.

Their record from this season’s Gwent County League Division Two was been expunged from the official website.

The club then released a statement confirming the club now ceases to exist.

A short statement was released on the clubs official Twitter saying: “We’ve had a few teams message for pre-season friendlies but unfortunately, we have now folded as a club.

“We’ve had a fantastic journey and made some brilliant memories.”

The Newport based club had been participants in the Gwent County League for the last nine yers.

Having spent just one season in the Gwent County League after being relegated in 2003, the club would have to wait seven years to play in the League again.

Earning promotion back in 2010, the club earned back-to-back promotions in 2013 and 2014 to get to within one league of the Welsh League. However they were relegated in 2017, having finished bottom.

The club had one full season in the sixth tier, finishing second from bottom but were spared relegation.

Earlier in the season, manager Ian Summers departed the club to take up the managerial role with Welsh Football League side Chepstow Town.

Summers has since moved on and become assistant at Gwent County League Division One side Ynysddu Welfare.

Marshfield folding means that the Division finishes on 11 teams.
